How do we care for our portrait?

Your Lord & Darling portrait is a already framed for maximum longevity and suitable for display…it’s intended for display!

The primary enemy is ultra-violet radiation that is most often found in direct sunlight and florescent lights.  Although your Lord & Darling portrait will have some of the best available protection from UV-radiation, some radiation still leaks through, and over the course of many decades exposure to very strong sources like direct sunlight can gradually cause the colors to fade.  It may be a century before this kind of fading becomes noticeable in a Lord & Darling portrait, but you can extend the longevity of your portrait by hanging it in an area shaded from direct sunlight.

If you use florescent lights for illumination, reduce the number of hours the portrait is exposed to it.  You  can also move the florescent lights farther away; doubling the distance of the light to the portrait will cut the amount of harmful UV-radiation by 3/4ths.

Heat is another enemy.  Try to avoid hanging the portrait directly over any heat source such as a central heating register.  Fully glass-enclosed fireplaces are safe, but avoid hanging the portrait over open fireplaces.

Moisture is also an enemy.  Your Lord & Darling portrait is sealed to both allow it to “breath” (which protects against dry rot and fungus) and yet to prevent swift humidity effects.  The humidity of normal home living rooms should not harm it, but avoid hanging it in rooms that are abnormally humid, such as bathrooms with showers.

The final enemy is physical damage.  Hang the portrait on the wall securely.  Your framed Lord & Darling portrait will be too heavy to hang from nails into the typical drywall.  Also, do not use the large screw-in augers advertised for drywall; these will also  pull out too easily.   Instead, use heavy-duty “toggle” style hanger bolts labeled to hold at least 75 pounds—these may be either metal or plastic.  Alternately, use #8 or larger screws firmly screwed into wooden studs within the wall.

Never use cleaning sprays directly on the frame or the glazing of your portrait—there is a danger of the liquid seeping past the frame to the print.  Also, be sure to use a cleaner and cloth specifically recommended for acrylic to prevent scratching.

If there are young children in the house, be sure to hang the portrait out of their reach.

The Golden Memories Disc  that comes with the Keepsake Package should be stored in its container.  The container is not air tight, but it is sealed tightly enough to prevent physical damage under most circumstances.  If you place it in a different container, please make sure the container's sides do not contact that surface of the disc or any part of the disc except the hub.  Do not expose the disc to heat sources (above 90F) for long periods or to excessive humidity.
